I believe it's done here to save the cost of having the mailman go from house to house now, there are "community" mailboxes. In my case, we have a clubhouse where I live and each owner has a large locking mailbox in a bank of mailboxes (think of a wall at a post office lined with mailboxes, only these are much wider than the typical post office box, yet just as sturdy). The mailman can easily fill 100 of these boxes without walking more than 10 feet
