MN 102 - Grand Casino, Mille Lacs

Not as big as the Grand Hinkley, in the state known as "land of lakes" it is only right that Mille Lacs is on the edge of a huge lake just 50 mailes west of Hinkley. Mille Lacs and Hinkley have a lot of parallels in the card types, except while Hinkleys were all silver, those at Mille Lacs were black, as you see below. In the Guide, there are listed 4 punchcard types and a combination punchcard/magnetic strip card that is type 5. I have none of these. Type 6 (with DLR CP mark) and type 7 (with no mark) had the text still stacked to the left to leave room for the slots they were not punching in the cards. Unlike Hinkley, with the next three types they realized they did not have to waste that space and spread the text out. Types 8,9 and 10 (the current issue) had no mfg mark, a CPICA 23497 mark, and cpi 2000854 mark.

A side story about Grand Casino cards. Do you see that worn red triangle on front of the type five card? It is printed on a clear 1 1/8" square sticker applied to the front on the card. I can relate the reason for it. Five or six years ago, when they were switching the machines from punchboard readers to magnetic, they took a while to gradually do this. For a period they had some machines one way, some the other. They sent out with their slot club newsletter a sticker that was a blue or green square this size that people were to attach to their old punchtype cards. Players were also told to stop and get a new card (magnetic) on there next trip which had a red triangle sticker on it. That way, the players carried two cards for each casino during the changeover, and when they sat down the card readers also had been marked with these stickers. If the player saw a red triangle, the players knew it was a new box, and they knew that their new card, also with a red triangle would work. If they saw a blue/green square, they knew the should use their old card with the that sticker on it. At Mille Lacs I was reminded of this when I found this old card with the triangle sticker and saw a number of machine that still have the worn triangle stickers on them.
