the security offered by a narrow card reader and a wide card reader should be the same. Why have a second style of hardware? The change has a big overall impact. Not only is there a door lock change, but the Registration Desk equipment must change, the maintenance equipment needs to have a second set of tools and I'll bet the software needs an upgrade.

I guess we'll have to get some first-hand knowledge, but I'm thinking that the MGM/Mirage group is wide-card based.
