Urgent security bulletin

Critical security flaws in several Microsoft Windows operating systems, particularly the new Windows XP operating system, make it possible for a hacker to exploit a buffer overflow to obtain system level access and effectively gain complete control of vulnerable computers remotely. According to Microsoft, this presents an "unprecedented" risk to consumers.

Affected systems include:

PCs running any default configuration of Microsoft Windows XP
PCs running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Millennium Edition with the Universal Plug and Play Service installed and running

All customers running default Windows XP systems -- or Windows 98, 98SE or ME with the Universal Plug and Play Service installed -- are strongly urged to immediately patch their systems. Failure to do so will leave your system at extreme risk.
