Proud Mother Story

Just thought I’d share this information with my friends here on the board. My daughter, Pamela, has taken a job in Belgium. After spending nearly 8 years at Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon (Portland suburb) and working 12-14-16 hour days most of the time and wearing a pager so she was on call 24/7, she has made a drastic life change and will be doing strictly research which she is really looking forward to. The company she now works for manufactures the furnaces that Intel uses to “bake” the chips for our computers – and she’s worked closely with people in that production division the past couple years. I’m not sure what else this new company produces. Initially it’s planned that she’ll be a member of an international research team but in the not to distant future she hopefully will be promoted to lead this team (or that’s what she’s being told now). So she is now in a foreign country working 40 hours a week – no overtime – doesn’t know the language (Dutch) but is working on it. Right now she’s going thru culture shock but I’m sure time will change that. Her household goods are on a ship somewhere. They’re furnishing her an apartment (which is very small she says) and car for 3 months. She got the car last week so she can get out and see the country some – although driving without knowing the rules should prove interesting. She was told the Belgium government usually takes about 6 weeks to approve a work permit – it took 1 week. So she had to get ready to move faster than anticipated. Her house sold in 4 days at more than the asking price – the Portland market is very good right now. Pam got her B.S. in chemistry from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado and her PhD in chemistry from the University of Oregon in Eugene. After that she had a 2 year post-doc job at the University of Illinois (Champaign) and had been at Intel ever since.
