Just because people buy and sell cards on Ebay does not take away their title as collectors. I STARTED my collection of hundreds of cards buying on Ebay---and I collect MORE THAN ONE of each card so that down the road the card MIGHT be of some value to offset what I purchased in the first place. There is nothing wrong with that. When I am 90 and the cards are nicely tucked away in their appropriate folders, they're either gonna go for $1 at my estate sale or hopefully my kids will be smart enough to Ebay them. They might only bring in $5 (and then most of that goes for Ebay and Paypal fees) but for MOST of the Ebayers, it's just for the fun of it. I don't know of anyone that sells slot cards as a source of income---unless you can live on $3. That doesn't even get ya a gallon of gas nowadays. And if someone is lucky enough to sell something worth $50 or even $100---I say Great Job!!
I don't see any ruination of the hobby from Ebay---in fact Ebay is how someone could get a card that they've been wanting for a long time to complete their collection. Plus a lot of times, I get to see the new cards that are out there since I am unable to travel to all the casinos. If I have to pay a few dollars for a card, it's sure cheaper than an airline ticket and a hotel!
Interesting question for everyone----just why do you collect cards?
A friend of mine asked why I do it...because down the road they aren't going to mean anything to anybody but me. And when I'm gone......so is my hobby.
Plus--I've met some of the nicest people through Ebay. If I hadn't turned around and sold some of my cards that I decided to not keep any longer (tastes change you know), I would never have had the great conversations that I have had with a LOT of the people that are on this board. Some of them I even call my friends.
Have a great weekend!
